Our Blood Bank provides life-saving blood products to hospitals around the country; because just like humans, pets with traumatic injuries or certain medical conditions require blood transfusions. The demand for blood products continues to increase and we are always welcoming new canine donors into our program. A single donation can save more than one life because both the red blood cells and the blood plasma are used.

Donations are performed by our certified veterinary technicians. A small square on the dog’s neck is shaved and scrubbed for sterility. With the dog laying calmly on its side, one unit of blood is drawn. A single donation can be used for more than one transfusion because the blood can be separated into two components: red blood cells and plasma. Throughout the donation process, the dog is comforted by our staff. After the donation the dog receives a complimentary nail trim, lots of treats and a small meal before going home to rest. The donation takes 10 to 20 minutes, but with preparation and post donation observation, you can expect your dog to stay for about an hour. You are welcome to leave your dog with us for a few hours or for the day if that is more convenient for you.

If your dog qualifies to be a donor, we request that they donate six times annually. We will call and arrange the donations at a convenient time for you.

You do not have to be a Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital client to be part of the donor program. Your dog can continue to see your primary care veterinarian. We will partner with your veterinarian to ensure that your dog continues to be a good candidate for the donor program.
